Installing Dash Cameras in Electric Vehicles

Dash Cameras and EV’s

I personally have owned 2 Electric vehicles myself a 2020 Kia Soul EV and a 2023 VW ID4 and we work on these vehicles all the time. A lot of people think the wiring is completely different from an internal combustion engine vehicle. However, the wiring is the same on Hybrid, EV, gas, and diesel vehicles. For instance, if we do a Kia Niro or Niro EV the wiring is the same for wiring a dash camera.

Hybrid Vehicles

A lot of times people think we can not install a dash camera into their hybrid or electric vehicle. The only major difference we see is push button start and regular key start has some differences in wiring.

Is it possible to use your Electric Vehicle battery to power your dash camera?

The EV battery takes the place of your gas tank. So, a lot of times there is confusion as people think why cant i use this big battery? Even I was confused back in 2019 when I got my Kia Soul. Keep in mind the Electric vehicle batteries range from 200 to 800 volts. Therefore, you can not hook up your 12 volt aftermarket dashcam to it. electric vehicle battery

My EV battery will charge my accessory battery

A lot of the EV's when you are plugged in will charge your accessory battery under your hood. So, a lot of people will claim they do not need a battery pack for dash cam parking mode. But, the main challenge is I have never been able to verify this and if it was true why have people with EV's had a dead accessory battery?

Battery Protection

Working on Electric vehicles is completely safe when hiring a professional installer. When we work on EV's we typically put low battery protection at 12.2 volts. We always recommend buying a dash camera that has timer mode protection. That way you can limit the amount of time the dash cam can record while parked. Most dash cameras you see on Amazon don't have this setting. The batteries installed into EV's and hybrid vehicles are very small. It is not a normal size battery you are use to seeing in a gas vehicle. I would say they are about the size of a golf cart battery on some vehicles. We have worked on the following Electric Vehicles
