What are they? What do they do? Why would I want one? Where would I install one? Record while parked with a dash cam battery pack.
What Does a Dash Cam Battery Pack do?
With a hardwired dash camera hooked up in parking mode, the constant discharge on your car battery over a long period of time can cause wear and tear. This device only draws power to charge when you are driving your vehicle. Which prevents damage to your car battery over time. With the ignition off the dash camera relies solely on the battery pack for power. This eliminates the need to draw power from the vehicle’s battery.
Why Would You Want One?
The main reason why people typically want this is because they are worried about something happening while parked. Vandalism, hit & run, or maybe someone breaks into your vehicle. Depending on the battery pack and dash camera combo you choose. You can have upwards of 50 days of coverage while parked. If there is ever an incident the dash camera will lock the video for you to review later. For example, most dash cams we carry offer motion detection, time lapse, or impact detection.
Lithium Phosphate vs Lithium Ion Battery?
The Lithium phosphate battery has the edge over lithium ion both in terms of cycle life it will last 4 to 5 times longer and safety. This is a key advantage because lithium-ion batteries can overheat and even catch fire while lithium phosphate does not.
So, what is the life expectancy of a Lithium Phosphate battery? Well, life expectancy is one of the biggest perks rated to last around 5,000 cycles. That is 10 years or so depending on usage of course. Even after 5,000 cycles lithium phosphate batteries can function at 70% capacity.
I personally have the IROAD powerpack Pro 12 in my vehicle for last 2.5 years. It still functions to specification with no drop in performance.
Lead acid batteries tend to gas out when discharged past 50%. The information I am sharing with you was taken off lithiumhub.com.
