What is 4k Resolution?

4k dash cam resolution is the
highest resolution currently available for dash cams on the retail market. The k stands for kilo, which means thousand. Four thousand refers to the number of horizontal pixels in the images captured. With a vertical pixel count of 2160, that means there are more than 8 million pixels in each frame of a 4k resolution recording. In comparison, Full
HD 1080p resolution only has about 2 million pixels per image.

Higher resolution means a much clearer image, more intricate details, and a sharper, more true to life representation of recorded events. With higher resolutions, your dash
cam footage should be crystal clear, not blurry or distorted.

What Makes a True 4k Dash Cam?

For a dash cam to be true 4k, its image sensor needs to be at least 8 megapixels. This is only logical since a camera can only display what it is able to capture. If a dash cam is advertised as 4k, but its image sensor is only 4 or 5 megapixels, then the resulting footage will have the resolution of Full HD or 2k; the larger file size to makes it appear as though it is 4k resolution
when it isn’t. That is why it is important to check out the specs and product information before you purchase a dash cam.

Do I Need to Watch My Footage on a 4k Screen?

No. Although watching your 4k
footage on a 4k monitor is the only way to fully appreciate the high quality resolution, it is not absolutely necessary. You can watch your 4k dash cam footage on any screen, but the larger file types may slow
down older computers. When you view your 4k videos on a non-4k screen, the files will be shrunk and the resolution reduced, so you’ll basically
be seeing it as though it were 1080 or Full HD, but with more detail and the ability to zoom in much further.

Is a 4k Dash Cam Worth It?

The video you’ll get with a 4k
dash cam is unquestionably clearer and more detailed than what you would get with a lower resolution dash cam; the drawback is that the file sizes are much bigger.

The larger file sizes of 4k dash
cam footage mean you will need to have a higher capacity storage card.

It’s recommended that you get at least a 64 GB memory card.
Alternatively, you could get a camera that features advanced video compression technology to reduce the size of the video files. The drawback with this feature is that many playback devices are not equipped with the software to be able to read and decompress these file types, so getting a larger Micro SD card remains your best option.

With that in mind, a 4k dash cam is clearly the best choice if you are able to afford the price difference. The ability to zoom in and enlarge details in the footage without losing image crispness and clarity could make all the difference in the event of an accident or break-in. If you live in an area with high rates of crime involving vehicles, such as carjacking, break-ins, theft, and vandalism, you will feel safer and better protected with a 4k dash cam. The same can be said for expensive, rare, or custom vehicles or for vehicles that are used to transport valuable cargo.
