Testing Dash Cameras in Extreme Heat: Which Can Handle Summer Temperatures?

Everyone is asking us how dash cameras perform in extreme heat? As summer temperatures soar in regions like Texas, Florida, and California, the performance and durability of dash cameras can be seriously tested. Excessive heat can lead to device shutdowns, compromising footage capture and safety. In this post, we examine how several popular dash cameras withstand high temperatures, revealing which models excel in extreme conditions.

The Testing Methodology

To accurately assess the performance of various dash cameras, we utilized a large oven to create a controlled high-heat environment. We monitored temperatures using two Fluke multimeters with K-type temperature probes and a ThermoPro thermometer to ensure consistent readings. Our setup included:

A calibrated oven capable of reaching high temperatures.
A heat-resistant surface replicating a car's dashboard, using glass to mimic a typical installation.
Continuous temperature monitoring to track the cameras' performance.

Results of the Tests

Viofo A229 Pro and A229 Plus

The testing began with the Viofo A229 Pro and A229 Plus models. The A229 Pro shut off at approximately 171°F, whereas the A229 Plus performed better, withstanding temperatures up to 183°F before shutting down. Given these results, the A229 Plus is a more reliable choice for high-heat environments.

BlackVue DR970X Plus LTE

Next, we assessed the BlackVue DR970X Plus LTE, which demonstrated remarkable durability. It continued operating until reaching 189°F, shutting off shortly after. This model has proven itself as one of the most heat-resistant options available.

Vueroid D21 4K vs. FineVu GX 4K

In a direct comparison, the Vueroid D21 4K and FineVu GX 4K were subjected to escalating temperatures. The FineVu GX 4K shut off around 181°F, while the Vueroid D21 4K continued to function and ultimately reached over 200°F in our testing, marking it as an exceptionally robust choice. That is amazing how the dash cameras perform in extreme heat.

Thinkware U3000 and Others

Further tests included models like the Thinkware U3000 and Vantrue N4 Pro. The U3000 did not shut off until it entered smart parking mode at around 196°F, suggesting it may endure even higher temperatures without a complete shutdown. However, the Vantrue N4 Pro faced challenges with adhesive failure during testing, raising questions about its reliability. However, it did stay on until 195°F.
